Limit disk space usage

3.2.2

In Archive Server for Mdaemon there are several factors that can increase disk space occupation:

  1. ASM's Database
  2. ASM's Repository
  3. ASM's Log Folder

ASM database stores ASM's configuration, messages main data (sender, recipient, subject, etc) used to perform searches, index messages, statistics creation. Message indexing allows searches into message body.
Please be careful as indexing and generating statistics greatly increases the database's size.
ASM repository stores a complete copy of the messages archived by asm
ASM log folder records every aspect of ASM activity: message archiving, import and export, maintenance routines, errors.

  • Limit database space occupation
For an estimate of a single message's space occupation, click here.
For information about how to limit database growth, read this article.
  • Limit repository growth
Repository space occupation roughly equals the total size of the messages it stores. To restrict the overall size you can:

    • enable message compression (Configuration > system > Archive). Enabling messages compression also has ASM to compress previously archived messages.
    • enable both dedicated settings (don't archive spam or and infected messages), and selective archiving by user/domain. Use archiving rules in order to avoid archiving messages you know you will not need.
    • export to CD/DVD older messages and remove them from ASM
  • Limit log folder size
By default, ASM uses a very verbose log level (debug) and stores logs for seven days before deleting them. In order To reduce disk space occupation you can change the settings in the section Configuration> System > General. The less verbose the log level is, the less space the log itself will require and consequently the less information will be stored about ASM activity.
"Info" is the level which logs least.
