Choosing database

Article applies to Archive Server for MDaemon version: 4.0.9

Archive server for MDaemon 3.2.9 supports SQL Server 2005, 2008 and 2012 (Express versions included) or MySQL.
Archive server for MDaemon 4 supports SQL Server 2005, 2008 and 2012 (Express versions included) while, from this version it is not possible to install it with MySQL database.

If you don’t have anyone of this database available, ASM 3.2.9 setup can install:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express R2 SP1 (size limitation: 10GB
  • MySQL Community Edition (GPL) 5.0.67

ASM 4 setup can install:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express R2 SP1 (size limitation: 10GB)

Express editions of SQL Server have several limitations including the maximum size that cannot be exceed: 4/10GB;this makes them usable only for small/medium production environments (approximately, with 10GB database, you can store about 500,000 messages).MySQL and not-Express versions of SQL Server do not have size limitations, so, they are real solutions to take into consideration. MySQL has the advantage of being available in the free version though (the free version) has lower performance and stability compared to SQL Server.

Whatever DB has been chosen it is raccomended to have a separate server for it, different from the MDaemon one. It’s also raccomended to doregular backups for this server.

In case you are installing ASM with MySQL option, take note of this behaviour:

–  There are no [Start | All Programs] voices for MySQL
–  MySQL is locally installed and there is no command line prompt option
–  When ASM is uninstalled MySQL is not removed

Real numbers:

Achab is archiving mails since 2005. At the end of february 2013 the situation was this:

– 6 milions messasges archived
– Messages indexing enabled
– 93 GB Database (SQL Server 2008 on a database server)
 183 GB repository (External unity)

Although the huge amount of data application, performances are not deprecated.
